I have always wanted to do Bag End! I have seen so many renditions of Bilbo's house, and though very cool, they all seem to be missing something or other. I wanted to do a model as complete as possible. It was only limited to the base I started with. And, instead of just concentrating on the outside, I built the entire interior before working on the exterior. I hope you like it.
| This is the map I used to plot and carve out the interior |
| Once I carved the base and ceiling out, I set the map in the floor for reference |
| Fitting the ceiling |
| I removed the map for painting and started on the front |
| Setting the front pieces bit by bit |
| Adding walls with doorways and some floors in the Entrance Hall, Parlour, Kitchen, and Dining rooms |
| Note one of the little embedded magnets and pegs that will help align and secure the top |
| More walls going in and the floors for the Master and Study |
| the fllors are in for the Pantry and Storage areas |
| Another alignment peg and magnet. The Spare room floor and fireplace is in, as well as the fireplace and shelves in the Master |
| Placing furniture in all of the rooms |
| There is more to do on the inside I break here to start on the top |
| Building up the hill top a bit |
| Ok, that is the basic shape |
| More furniture and details installed |
| The Entry Hall, with spare jackets, cloak and umbrella stand |
| The smoking room |
| The Pantry |
| Storage area with spare beds and bed rolls |
| The Study |
| The Master |
| One of the spare rooms with tree root sleeping nook. This one is across the back door hallway from the Master. |
| Another shot of the spare room with the sleeping nook in the lower left corner |
| Another angle view of the Master and Study |
| The kitchen and Dining room |
| The Parlour |
| Another angle of the Smoking room |
| The Pantry details |
| The bathing room and bed storage |
| The second spare room with tree root sleeping nook |
| Another angle of the second spare room. This one is just off of the Entry Hall |
| The Atrium |
| The Pantry off of the Atrium |
| The West Hall, storage, Spare Room suite with bathing area, and bedding storage |
| Another angle of the study showing Bilbo's desk with his writing material and journal |
| Another view of the Master |
| The Kitchen |
| The Parlour |
| Testing the lights and the top is plastered |
The tree is made from a couple of live black locust branch twigs tied together. Some of the edge flocking is starting |
| The tree gets flocked |
| The path get a fence |
| Looking good |
| More detail is being added here, chimneys, park bench under the tree, entry gate, etc. |
| The sign is on the gate |
| The path to the top |
It's a chilly evening and Bilbo is in his study with a nice fire going. He is hears guests coming up the walk to his front door. He hurries into the kitchen to start the fires, and then to light the Parlour fireplace, before greeting his guests. The three chimneys have smoke plumes. The Master and Smoking rooms notably do not. |
| If the base that I started with had been bigger the upper path would have swung around and met up with the path to the base of the tree. |
| The top of the hill removed |
I can see why you havent been building boats, awesome work, a masterpiece!

Thank you Iain. And you are the very first to comment on this new blog. I decided to create it because, based on response, it appears that there was little interest in booknooks and dioramas from the miniature wargaming community.
DeleteOh, and I am still building ships. I am presently rigging a 1/1200 Langton two decker that is nearly complete.
DeleteI always admire displays of skill in minature and you do that in spades with your ships and dioramas/booknooks , looking forward to your next two decker!
