Lake Town Booknook

Here is another Tolkien inspired booknook, Lake Town from the Hobbit movie, complete with Bard and the fish barrels hiding the dwarves. This time I made it entirely from cardboard and balsa wood, craft sticks and twigs for the wharf decks. I used wire for the portcullis front gate.

I started out with an energy bar box, painted a strip of water down the inner side between the folds. Then I set the dock posts made of real twigs, and built the narrow docks from craft sticks.

I changed my mind and decided to use a mirror to give more depth to the canal, so I cut out the end section. This is the first house I built. I felt it wasn't quite ramshackle enough for the look I wanted.

This is the second building, a bit more ramshackle

The third house is done. I started adding some rope

And a drying fishing net

Another net for later

The left side cardboard flap with some midnight blue paint and marked for lighting

The left side done and lights tested. The torch gets replaced by a lantern later. There were no torches in the movie, just lanterns

The first building for the right side. Now this is the ramshackle look I was working towards.

Forming the boat prow second story deck for the next house out of cosclay

The first few buildings done. Room for one more...

The buildings for the right side are done

These are shots I referenced to get Bard's boat right

Drawing out the design

sandwiching a piece of balsa wood between the upper and lower deck templates, then sanding the edges smooth

My supervisor

Looks pretty close, I'm satisfied

The left side

The right side

This was my reference for building the front gate

These are all of the Tolkien nooks I have left. The others are with my daughters, relatives, and friends

I ended up shortening the portcullis gate a bit for easier viewing
